Authentic Handmade Moroccan Berber Inspired Round Serving Platter Tray, Bring Home a Beautifully Functional Near East Tradition, 8” Diameter Sale price$89.99 USD

Description

A round ceramic serving platter hand-painted in a Berber pattern, glazed to a smooth finish that wipes clean between uses. Sized for sharing plates, flatbread or a spread of small dishes.

Construction

  • Hand-thrown: shaped on the wheel by a potter, so the exact rim curve varies slightly from piece to piece.
  • Berber pattern: painted by hand under the glaze.
  • Fully glazed: smooth, easy-clean surface that will not stain or absorb odors.

Care

Hand wash with warm water and a soft sponge. Avoid the dishwasher and abrasive scourers, which dull the hand-painted glaze over time. Let a hot piece cool before rinsing it in cold water to avoid thermal shock.

About the craft

Karchel buys these pieces direct from potters and metalworkers in Morocco who still work by hand — thrown, shaped or hammered to a template, glazed or embossed by eye, and finished without a factory line. Small variation from piece to piece is a mark of that process, not a defect.

How it compares

Care

Hand wash with warm water and a soft sponge. Avoid the dishwasher and abrasive scourers, which dull the hand-painted glaze over time.

Lead-free and safe for food contact on pieces marked for cooking or serving. Avoid sudden temperature changes — let a hot tagine cool before rinsing it in cold water.

A little unevenness in the glaze, a fingerprint in the paint, or a slight variation in shape from piece to piece is normal on hand-thrown ceramic, not a fault.

How it is made

Thrown, painted and fired by hand

Short chapters on how this piece is made, what it is made from and how it reaches you.

In the medina

Thrown on the wheel, painted by hand

Each piece starts as a lump of local clay, thrown on a foot-powered wheel and left to dry before its first firing. The pattern is then painted freehand, so brushstroke width and spacing shift slightly across the surface — no stencils, no transfers.

Glaze

Lead-free, safe for food contact

Lead-free, safe for food contact

The glaze is formulated without lead so cooking and serving pieces are safe for direct food contact. Colour depth varies a little from firing to firing — the kiln, not a factory line, is what sets the final tone.

Ways to use it

It earns its shelf space more than one way

It earns its shelf space more than one way

Handmade ceramic rarely does only one job.

  • On the stovetop, cooking a tagine low and slow over a diffuser
  • Straight to the table, serving from the dish it cooked in
  • As a centrepiece, filled with fruit, bread or flowers
  • As a gift, since a small teapot or bowl wraps well

Cooking or serving

Know which piece you have

Know which piece you have

Cooking tagines and pots are fired at a higher temperature for durability over a direct flame. Decorative and serving pieces use a finer glaze suited to the table rather than the stovetop.

  • Season a new cooking piece before first use
  • Bring it up to heat gradually, never in a sudden jump
  • Check the product title and description for whether a piece is rated for cooking

Questions before you buy

Is it safe for food and cooking?
Yes — the glaze is lead-free. Pieces intended for the stovetop are labelled for cooking in the title and description; decorative and serving pieces use a finer glaze not intended for direct heat.
Can I put it in the dishwasher or microwave?
Hand wash is best to protect the hand-painted glaze. Cooking pieces can go in a low oven; avoid the microwave and a cold dishwasher rinse straight after cooking, since the sudden temperature change can crack ceramic.
Why does the glaze or pattern look slightly different from the photo?
Each piece is painted and fired by hand, so colour depth and brushwork shift a little from one to the next. This is normal for handmade ceramic, not a defect.
How is it packed for shipping?
Individually wrapped and boxed before it leaves Fes, then sent by parcel courier. If anything arrives damaged, contact us and we will replace it.
Can I return it?
Yes, within 30 days of delivery in its original condition.
